Here are a few of my favorite things, in no particular order.

1. Gender and Grace by Mary Stewart van Leeuwen

A classic work in gender studies from a biblical perspective. Stewart van Leeuwen provides social scientific evidence and a solid biblical foundation for understanding the partnership of men and women in creation. I especially appreciate her close examination of the creation account and insights on the social consequences of Adam and Eve’s original sin.

2. Sex God by Rob Bell

Controversial pastor and author Rob Bell takes a look at relationships with God and others. He emphasizes the human need for intimacy in connected relationships with our Creator and community.

3. Clowning in Rome by Henri J. M. Nouwen

One of my all-time favorite authors is priest and professor Henri Nouwen. In this small book, he explores how Christians can address the practical needs of people in the midst of pressing issues. The book poses four paradoxes of the spiritual life and offers insights on how we can live in the tension between them. I am always drawn to the depth of Nouwen’s observations and the transparency of his writing.

4. Intercessory Prayer by Dutch Sheets

An indispensable book on the nature of prayer. Sheets begins by laying the groundwork with a historical look at the ancient biblical texts in the original language. He builds from there to a practical discussion of how to apply prayer principles to our lives.
